Happy Mardi Gras! I have something different today in honor of it being Fat Tuesday! My sister Kathy in Houston sent me these pictures from a Mardi Gras Gala she attended a couple of weeks ago.
For the last 56 years the O'Connell High School in Galveston has had a Mardi Gras benefit. Apparently each student does his or her own fundraising and whoever raises the most gets to be the Queen and King. The other participating high school students are Dukes and Duchesses. Even though it's a High School fundraiser the elementary and middle school also join in the fun. Each high school couple have 2 elementary school pages and 2 middle school kids that I don't know what they are called. The organizing committee picks a theme for the event. This year was books. So the Moms of the students are given a pattern to make the trains for their children. They are very "quilt like" and intricate! This one below is a Great Gatsby one. A Mom sewed a lot of sequins and little mirrors!
This green one is a Jungle Book train. In the corner you can see a part of an Alice in Wonderland train with a clock on it.
Here's a better picture. See how long these things are! The orange one on the left is a Don Quixote train.
This last one is a detail shot of something. Kathy couldn't remember what. So, there was a pageant parade into the room, dinner, and dancing. The trains were hung on the stage for everyone to see.
And a good time was had by all!! Happy Fat Tuesday!
